Christophe of Mytilène, the Greek Scholar ("Sifhr" RPG)

His role in this game is to examine all kinds of manuscripts. Christophe excels in understanding and translating Greek, Latin, and Arabic.
Christophe is a monk from Mount Athos, nestled along the Aegean Sea on a peninsula of ancient Macedonia. This mythical mountain is the age-old refuge of a host of Orthodox Christian monasteries.
As is often the case, the character reflects the place that shaped him. Athos was once a giant, struck down by the gods who were angered by his audacity in challenging them. An architect once proposed carving the mountain in the likeness of Alexander the Great — a native son who became master of the world.
Christophe deliberately cultivates a proud, aloof, even arrogant attitude, much to the irritation of those around him. This sense of superiority is likely fueled by the indignities inflicted upon the Holy Mountain by Western lords. Since the Crusades began pouring their waves of "barbarians" into the region, these invaders have shamelessly seized monastic lands and driven out librarians like him from their sacred duties. In the end, forming ties with the Muslims doesn't seem so bad after all.
Well, "forming ties" might not be the right phrase. Christophe was used as a bargaining chip so that a Byzantine lord could ransom his son, captured during a battle against a vassal of the Caliph of Baghdad. Just a footnote in the settling of a ransom.
But the Baghdadis knew better: beneath his haughty façade, Christophe is a master of many dialects. And he knows that his pursuit of knowledge depends on this alliance with the semi-barbarians who worship Allah.

Hope you'll like it. :)

In the world of "Sifhr", everything takes place as it did in the historical reality of the Crusades, as we know them. Legitimate power is held by the Caliph of Baghdad, even if real power is fragmented between a Turkish sultan, several emirs, dynasties of local princes and countless second-rate lords.
Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099, but its mastery was undermined by the Muslim reconquests. Damascus is a buffer zone between Antioch, under Christian domination, Egypt ruled by the caliph of the Fatimid dynasty, the holy places towards happy Arabia, and Mesopotamia in which Baghdad nestles.
But this chessboard is limited to geopolitical considerations that have a hidden side. It's up to you to know the basics.
You are a group of heroes and, as initiates, you know that there is a close link between your wider environment, the macrocosm, and each individual, even isolated places, so many microcosms. The pneuma is the transmission belt between all these elements. It is an energy that emanates from the stars and from the earth, and circulates, influencing people and events.
By gathering detailed information in the field, you can influence its composition, interpreting it in a variety of ways. But this ability must remain a secret. For three centuries, your kind have joined the Macchina tariqa, a brotherhood that operates in the shadows, masking its knowledge and powers, avoiding reproach from the more conservative elements of society, and the covetousness of the powerful who would like to instrumentalize it, although it remains under the obedience of the Baghdad caliph himself.
